The tradition of writing and preserving the verses of Sahib Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji started from the time of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. Shri Guru Nanak Dev ji wrote his holy words in a book and while giving guriya to Shri Guru Angad Dev ji, Guru ji also gave him the book of holy words collected.
